Tell the US Department of Education to stop funding for-profit charter schools

For too long, for-profit charter schools have taken precious resources from our communities and the public schools that serve 90 percent of Ohio’s students. And for too long, the big business corporate boards behind those charter schools have raked in federal grant money without having any real accountability for how that money is being spent or how well students are learning.

Now, the US Department of Education is considering changing the standards, and it is accepting public comment on the proposal through April 13th.

Please write a personalized message calling for a ban on for-profit schools from applying for grants and receiving federal funding to open charters. Ask the US Department of Education to hold charter schools to the same standards as traditional public schools.

Sample letter to adapt

I am a [job title/educator] from [city and state].

I am writing to express my support for the Department of Education’s efforts to prohibit for-profit charter schools from applying for federal grants or using my tax dollars to create more charter schools that prioritize earnings over student learning. Our students deserve a world-class education in schools that have proven themselves to be responsible stewards of public funding. I strongly believe any school that receives public money must be held to the same standards as traditional public schools.
