Join the OEA Special Education Workgroup
We are thrilled to announce the creation of the OEA Special Education Workgroup, a new initiative designed to address the pressing challenges in special education across Ohio. Your participation is crucial as we work to improve educational outcomes for students with special needs.
About the Workgroup
Formed through a New Business Item at the 2024 OEA Spring Representative Assembly, the Special Education Workgroup aims to tackle key issues in the field, including:
- Workload and Caseload Limits: Continuing to ensure that special education students receive the appropriate level of support and services they need to succeed.
- Educator Retention and Recruitment: Developing effective strategies to attract and retain skilled special education professionals.
- Service Delivery and Support: Enhancing the ways in which special education services are provided to students.
The workgroup is tasked with generating actionable recommendations that will shape OEA resolutions, legislative policies, and model contract language. These recommendations will be reviewed and integrated into the advocacy efforts of relevant OEA departments, caucuses, and committees.
The workgroup will operate over approximately 18 months, with meetings scheduled roughly every six weeks, with a mix of remote and in-person meetings. The workgroup will also receive support from OEA staff experts in special education.
Why Your Involvement Matters
Teacher shortages, particularly in special education, are a growing concern throughout Ohio. Many districts face challenges with understaffing, affecting their ability to deliver effective education in the least restrictive environments. As OEA members, your insights and expertise are vital in diagnosing these issues and crafting practical solutions.
By joining the Special Education Workgroup, you will help shape policies and practices that directly impact both educators and students, making a meaningful difference in the field of special education.
