Community Conversations – Bridging Stories Seminar

OEA members are invited to join us for an engaging event that will help us to build relationships through communication.

Sponsored by the OEA-Retired Racial & Social Justice Committee and in partnership with Hakim Oliver, Community Conversations – Bridging Stories is intended to facilitate positive interaction and conversations to build a stronger community.

Participants will be led through discussions and introspective activities during our time together to recognize what makes each person unique through their history and experiences, and learn how we can create a vibrant, inclusive and understanding community.

SEMINAR AGENDA
I. First Session: “Appreciating Our Identity – First Impressions ” – (10:00am – 12:00pm)

Session Abstract:

Through exploring our uniqueness as individuals, we are able to increase our understanding of ourselves and others.

Session Description:

This session will include four interactive activities designed to learn about each other. Participants will share their stories in small groups.

Framework: Practicing Equity & Ethics

II. Lunch – (12:00pm – 1:00pm)

III. Second Session: “Building Community – Communicating Acceptance ” – (1:00pm – 3:00pm)

Session Abstract:

Through dissecting the four ways of communication we will gain a better understanding of how information is interpreted by another individual.

Session Description:

The presenter will introduce the four levels of communication. Through dissecting the four ways of communication we will gain a better understanding of how information is interpreted by another individual. The participants will break down a real-life scenario in small groups.

Framework: Practicing Equity & Ethics

A certificate of attendance will be issued to all participants. Approval for CEU credits is dependent upon your local LPDC committee.

Hakim Oliver is an Intervention Specialist at Mason High School. He has been in the Education field for eighteen years. Diversity and Inclusion is his passion. In addition to coaching football and track, Hakim created a Special Olympics club for Mason High School students with disabilities. Mr. Oliver presented at various conferences including; The High Aims Summer Institute, Mason Student Leadership Conference, The University of Tennessee Innovation and Teaching Learning Conference, Maysville Community and Technical College, Ignite Conference, Great Lakes I-Ready Leadership Symposium, and the Ohio State Teacher Leadership Summit. In addition to this, Hakim Oliver created Building Bridges to connect members of a community. These communities include Mason, Milford, Loveland, Lebanon, Maysville, Augusta, and Dayton.
