Leading for Rural Equity

Rural communities often feel left out of the conversation about social justice and equity. How do we value and support rural students and families? By exploring intersecting rural identities and challenges, we can see how the lived experiences and unique strengths of rural students enriches our educational system and our communities.

During this interactive, two-day professional learning seminar, participants will develop the skills needed to analyze and evaluate existing policies, practices, and dispositions and consider how to work toward equitable change in their schools and districts. Using the research and scholarship of Paul Gorski and Marceline Dubose, participants will:

=Explore their understanding of equity and inequity; consider how to apply the definitions of equity and inequity to school and community based scenarios;
=Develop and apply an equity lens to school-based scenarios and reframe narratives to create equitable responses;
=Consider mitigative and transformative approaches to equity;
=Learn content and skills for developing an equity plan within their schools and districts;
=Consider and apply the five equity abilities;
=Engage in collaborative planning time to conceptualize an equitable practices timeline for change within their educational context.

This seminar is limited to thirty members. OEA will provide: all resource materials; hotel costs at Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center for one night; lunch, dinner, and snacks for the first training day; and breakfast and lunch for the second training day.
